The Chronicle, Centralia/Chehalis Wash Newspaper
Letter to the Editor / Thursday, August 5, 2010 :
Ethel Woman Came to Rescue With Her Goats

Thank you for the article you ran May 10 on “Working With Goats” (page Life 1) about a business owned by Donna Smith in Ethel. Smith rents out her goat herd to clear land of all kinds of underbrush and blackberry vines.

As soon as I got the newspaper and read the article, I called her and asked for an appointment. She came out promptly and gave me an estimate. It took awhile before the area was dry enough to bring the goats in, but finally Smith was able to bring out 41 goats June 26, and they munched their way through the vine until June 28, tails wagging happily.

It was an entertaining weekend: the goats were fun to watch plowing their way through the vines, clearing the land. Smith and her family are stand-up comedians.

It was what I had wanted for a long time. We had blackberry vines that were taking over. Fighting them with weed eater blade is very time consuming and we don’t want to use toxic chemicals. The large herd of goats is a perfect green solution!
